‘At the moment…’ – Virgil van Dijk drops post-season update on Liverpool contract situation

Virgil van Dijk has given an update on his contract situation at Liverpool, with his current deal now just 13 months away from expiring.

The Reds captain was asked about his future after the final match of the season on Sunday, which of course saw the curtain come down on Jurgen Klopp’s magnificent time in charge at Anfield.

Regarding where things stand with his contract, the Dutch defender replied (via Liverpool Echo): “At the moment there is nothing for me to say. Nothing has changed and nothing is on the table either. No changes in my situation at all.”

Van Dijk’s non-committal response may provoke concern among some Liverpool fans that the situation could run on for another few months, a far from ideal scenario coming into the final year of his existing contract.

However, in the same interview with reporters, the 32-year-old made numerous references to the upcoming campaign and stated that he is ‘looking forward to next season already’.

That’d seem to suggest that he’s still very much committed to Anfield and eagerly anticipating the start of our new era under compatriot Arne Slot.

In the immediate aftermath of a long and hectic season, Van Dijk would likely have been reluctant to get dragged into an extensive update on his future, while his immediate focus will now be on Netherlands’ participation at Euro 2024.

We remain confident that Liverpool chiefs will soon sit down with the captain and ensure that his time on Merseyside extends beyond the expiry of his current deal in June 2025.
